This is my great-grandma’s cookie recipe and I just love it! It has been a family tradition to make (and of course, eat) these every December. They are really simple but look pretty impressive! They are also a great cookie to make with kids. Try them out for your next holiday get together!
Candy Cane Cookies
1/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter (softened)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp. almond ext.
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla ext.
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
1/2 c. crushed candy canes
1/2 c. sugar
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix thoroughly; butter, shortening, sugar, egg, and almond and vanilla extract. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half and blend food coloring into one half. Form dough into cane shape by rolling 1 tsp. dough into “snake” shape and then twisting both colors together. Place on greased baking sheet. Bake 9 min. While baking, mix crushed candy canes and sugar and sprinkle on hot cookies when they are done. Remove from baking sheet and allow the cookies to cool on a cooling rack.
How do you come up with your creative layouts? I love the recipe also. It’s wonderful to see how food links family from one generation to another.
How do I not remember these?! I will be making these for a family tomorrow night. Perfect timing! Thank ya much! 🙂
